LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

We acknowledge that Canada is situated on the traditional territories of many Indigenous nations, who have been stewards of these lands for millennia. From coast to coast to coast, we honor the rich history, languages, and cultures of the diverse First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples who have lived, traveled, and gathered on these lands long before the establishment of Canada.

This land includes the traditional territories of the Algonquin, Anishinaabe, Blackfoot, Cree, Dene, Haudenosaunee, Innu, Inuit, Métis, Mi’kmaq, Mohawk, Nuu-chah-nulth, Ojibwe, Saulteaux, Salish, and many more Indigenous nations. The territories are governed by Treaties such as the Robinson-Huron and Robinson-Superior Treaties, the Williams Treaties, the Numbered Treaties, the Peace and Friendship Treaties, and others, which outline the responsibilities of all people to protect and honor the land.

We specifically acknowledge that the Inuit are the original inhabitants and caretakers of the northern regions, the Métis have strong ties across the Prairies and parts of Ontario, and that First Nations peoples have distinct and unique relationships to land, water, and culture from the Atlantic to the Pacific, to the Arctic.

We also recognize the importance of the Dish With One Spoon Wampum agreement, an Indigenous law that calls for sharing and peace between all nations living within the territory of the Great Lakes. We are committed to reflecting on the impact of colonization, to honoring Indigenous voices, and to working toward meaningful and respectful relationships based on truth, justice, and reconciliation.
